What is ankle instability?

Ankle instability is a condition where the ligaments that hold the ankle joint in place are stretched or torn, leading to an unstable feeling in the ankle. This can cause pain, swelling, and a feeling of giving way or instability during activities such as walking, running, or jumping.

What is a Brostrom procedure?

A Brostrom procedure is a surgical procedure that aims to repair the stretched or torn ligaments in the ankle. This procedure involves reattaching the ligaments to the bone using sutures or anchors, which helps to restore stability to the ankle joint.

How is a Brostrom procedure performed?

A Brostrom procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia or regional anesthesia, depending on the preference of the surgeon. During the procedure, the surgeon will make a small incision in the ankle and locate the damaged ligaments. The surgeon will then reattach the ligaments to the bone using sutures or anchors, and may also remove any scar tissue or debris from the joint.

What can I expect after a Brostrom procedure?

When you wake up, you will have a plaster splint over your ankle. Do not take this off and do not get it wet. You will be seen 2 weeks after surgery at which time your surgeon will remove your staples and the plaster slab. Your ankle will then be placed in either a fiberglass cast or an Airboot. You will also be given a prescription for painkillers and antibiotics.

You will need to wear a protective boot or brace for 12 weeks to help protect and support the ankle while the tligament heal. You should avoid putting weight on the affected ankle for a few weeks post-op and apply ice as instructed to help reduce swelling and pain. You will start physical therapy a few weeks after surgery to help improve strength and flexibility of the ankle, and to promote healing. You will gradually begin to put weight on the affected ankle 2 weeks after surgery to help increase mobility and strength. You will be instructed by physio on how to perform daily activities such as showering, dressing, and driving, while keeping weight off the affected ankle. You will have several follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor your progress, remove sutures, and evaluate healing.

After the surgery, you will likely need to wear a cast or brace 12 weeks to allow the ligaments to heal. You will also need to avoid putting weight on the affected ankle for AT LEAST 2 weeks (this maybe longer depending on what conditions are found during surgery) and may need to use crutches or a wheelchair to move around. Physical therapy may also be recommended to help you regain strength and range of motion in your ankle. Physiotherapy is an important part of rehabilitation and for achieving the best possible outcome. Your surgeon will provide you with a handout of the insturctions to take to your physiotherapist. To achieve best results it is important to choose a team that has a lot of experience with this protocol.

When can I return to work after a Brostrom procedure?

The recovery time after a Brostrom procedure can vary from patient to patient depending on the extent of the injury and the type of work you do. In general, most patients can return to work within 4 to 6 weeks after the surgery, although some may require more time off if their job involves heavy physical activity or standing for long periods of time.

It is important to follow your surgeon's instructions regarding your post-operative care, including proper wound care, physical therapy, and activity restrictions. Your surgeon may also recommend that you modify your work duties or take time off if necessary to allow for proper healing and rehabilitation.

It is important to remember that every patient is different and recovery times can vary. It is essential to communicate with your surgeon and follow their recommendations to ensure a safe and successful return to work.
